TEA LEAF READING SERIES

Three Channel VIDEO INSTALLATION

Tea Leaf Reading series is a video installation in which three different archival images are drawn accurately with tea leaves and filmed in transition. All three images are in a perpetual state of transformation from one form to another.

The first video comprised of a WWII photograph of a soldier aiming at a cowering mother and child. We see the soldier transformed into a man peacefully standing next to the same woman and child. The swopping of men suggests that under different circumstances the soldier may merely have been a man out for a walk in the countryside.

The second video is a portrait of "Young Man" by Raffaello Sanzio which was stolen by Nazis during the WWII and lost to time. The picture slowly crumbles off the canvas but never entirely disappears leaving ghost-like traces implying perhaps it still exists somewhere.

The third video transforms from a fragment of Fra Angelico's Annunciation into a photograph of Mytych as a child and then into a picture of an ancient oak tree. All three images are witnesses to stories recounting the past.
