Dorota Mytych

Makeshift Revolutions

Mixed-media

In Makeshift Revolutions, Mytych draws inspiration from two sources: her time studying and living in Florence, and her childhood in Poland during a period of transition, where the culture of reuse stemmed from necessity. The work combines elements including one-point perspective, the soft pinks of Fra Angelico, and flattened cardboard boxes—materials that were saved and repurposed. Perspective Study 1 is based on Leonardo da Vinci’s preparatory drawing for The Adoration of the Magi; it depicts a scene of conflict, where people seem locked in struggle, fighting for position or power around something the viewer cannot fully understand. Perspective Study 2, painted in cinabrese pink, follows a different kind of logic—one that is quiet, where people and animals appear together without hierarchy. The work also features a predella: a series of smaller pieces that extend the conversation with allegorical figures and shifting symbols. By combining systems of perspective with reused materials, the work gently questions fixed ideas about how we see—and what we value.
